INTOXICATED MOTORIST

FINE OF £10 IMPOSED.

A collision between two motor-cars in Willis street at 8.40 last night resulted in the appearance at the Magistrate's Court to-day of John Thomas Watson (43) on a charge o,f being in charge of a motor-car while in a state of intoxication. The offence was admitted by the accused, ■who was represented by Mr. W. E. Leicester. "A constable on arrival at the scene of the collision noticed that the accused was under the influence of liquor, and Dr. Palmer, after examining Watson at the police station, certified that he was not in a fit state to drive a car," said SubJnspector Harvey, who prosecuted. Mr. Leicester submitted that Watson, who had had extensive driving experience, had consumed only five drinks the previous evening, but had been affected by the cold light air when he went out. "He .•was dazed by the cold air," said Mr. Leicester. "Where a man, perhaps accidentally, is overcome by conditions of cold, I eubmit that he is entitled to have another chance." The Magistrate (Mr. W. G. Riddell, 8.M.), after ascertaining that Watson had aiot previously been before the Court, convicted him and fined him £10. His license was also ordered to be suspended for one Inonth. He was allowed twenty-four hours in which, to pay the fine. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DANNEVIBKE, This Day.
