NOMINAL PENALTY

NEW METHOD OF SELLING GROCERIES.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, This Day. The Inspector of Awards proceeded in the Magistrate's CWrt against li. Stavcley, on four charges of breach of the grocers' award, the salaries paid to his assistants, all girls, being £2, &\, ss, £1, and 15s, whereas tho minimum wage for a grocer's assistant is £4 10s. The evidence showed that the defendant was running his business on lines in vogue in the United States, tho goods being arranged in small packages and selected by the customers themselves, who brought them to a counter where an assistant called out the price, after which payment was made at the cash register. The defendant regarded his assistants as clerks, and said they hart no knowledge of the grocery trade, and merely called the prices marked on the packages. Tho Magistrate held that it was a grocery business run in a .way new to New Zealand. Taking this into consideration, also with tho fact that the defendant was new to New Zealand, he imposed a nominal penalty of 10s on each charge.

Kingsway, Ltd.,-*7B and 80, L.tmbton quay, sell by auction at their rooms, tomorrow, at 2 p.m., the contents of seven rooms, removed from Hataitai.
