STREETS AND DRAINS

PETONE'S BIG PKOJECT.

A special meeting of the Petono Borough Council was held last evening for the purpose of deciding on the amount the council will propose should be borrowed for the purpose of widening Jackson street. Mr. H. Sladden presented a further report on the subject, and the opinion of Mr. B. C. Kirk, a former Mayor, and at present borough solicitor, who was present, was also obtained. After a long discussion, it was decided (1) to adopt the new building line set out by Mr. Sladdcn as the line to which the whole of. the north side of Jackson street will ultimately be set back; (2) to give public notification of the situation of this line; (3) to give a specific notification of this line to all the owners of property affected; (4) to immediately notify all owners of vacant land of the intention of the council to take the amount required for street widening under the Public Works Act; (5) to ask the ratepayers to sanction a. loan of 10,000 to carry out the first instalment of this work. The loans that the council will shortly ask the ratepayers to approve will therefore be—(l) £8000 for hill drainage, (2) £10,000 for sewer extensions, (3) £10,000 for street widening.
