IN TENSE ATMOSPHERE.

LONDON, 3rd May.

The House of Commons, opened with the customary questions. A tenseness of atmosphere was apparent, with cheering and counter-cheering and laughter as the leaders entered. Colonel Ashley, Minister of Transport, announced that the Ministry of Transport had arranged for a service of mo-tor-cars to convey members of the Commons to and from Parliament. The Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, at the end of the questions presented a message from the King, declaring a State of Emergency. He moved that a humble address be presented to Hia Majesty thanking him for the message. The Labour members insisted on a division on the address, which was carried by 308 votes to 108.
