EFFECTS OF THE STRIKE

IRONWORKS CLOSE DOWN

(Australian-New Zealand Cable Assn.) LONDON, 3rd May. Already the effects of the strike arc showing. Three big iron works at Motherwell, Glasgow, have closed owing to coal shortage, and others will follow immediately. A British advertising convention was abandoned after a thousand delegates had gathered at Blackpool, owing to fear of a railway disturbance. It is understood the railway employees will cease work at the end of the night service to-night, and trams and buses will not be worked on Tuesday. The Great Western Railway has appealed to its employees, asking them not to break their contracts by striking without notice.
