CATALINA ISLAND

NEW SILVER FIELD,

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

SAN FRANCISCO, 7th April

Discovered by accident, a veritable treasure trove of silver ore is being unearthed on Catalina Island, off the mainland in the Pacific, west of Los Angeles. Nearly £100,000 worth of rich ore has been taken from Mount Black Jackalone in recent months, and the island is yielding a steady flow of silver at the rate- of twice that amount annually, according to a statement made by the president of the C.italina Island Company. The resources of the island, purchased as a pleasure resort six years .ago by William Wrigley, jun.,. Chicago choiring gum magnate, have been barely tapped. An extra force of diggers arrived last week to assist in developing recent "strikes," and the silver ore is being tunnelled out daily for shipment to tlie smelter at Shelby, in San Francisco Bay. "The island is loaded from stem to stern with silver ana other ores," declared the company official. "Twentyfour veins have boon uncovered since the initial discovery at Black Jack two years ago." The silver oro assays from £20 to £G0 per ten. Operations are being extended, for it is believed that hero is a second Broken Hill—of incalculable supplies.
