FLOOD AT TAUMARUNUI

TARINGAMOTU BRIDGE WASHED AWAY.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

TAUMARUNUI, This Day.

A tremendous downpour last night caused the rivers to rise rapidly this morning. The Wanganui River, however, was not greatly affected by the flood waters, although it was running much above its normal level, but the Ongarue River is high, and carrying much debris, with the result that the Taringamotu Bridge was carried away at 11 o'clock this morning. This means that communication north of Taumarunui by road is now cut off. A bridge at the same place was carried away by last year's floods. A stock bridge at Napier's farm, in the Taringamotu Valley, was also washed away. Fortunately the rain ceased about 4 o'clock this morning, and has held off since. Had the rain continued the Wanganui River would probably have risen to a dangerous height.
