PORT NICHOLSON SILVER BAND.
Latecomers to the Grand Opera House last evening failed to gain admission to the second concert of the 1926 season of the Port Nicholson Silver Band. Members of the "New Aladdin" Pantomime Company, by kind permission of the J. C Williamson management, were the soloists. Miss Roma Phillips, soprano, was recalled for her singing of "Lilac Tree, and sang "I Love the Moon, and; being recalled again, delighted with "There a Light in Your Eye," from "Kissing Time." Miss Sadie Pepper, another soprano, sang "Rosebud," and, as a recall, "Rose in the Bud," showing herself to be a charming songstress. Miss Dorothy Dewar had to make several reappearances before the audience would allow her to depart. She has a sweet mezzo-soprano voice, and sang "Bird of Love Divine and "Why Couldn't it^-be You?" The bass songs of Mr. Dave Loffman, "Ne'er do Well" and another recall were a treat to hear. All the artists had flattering receptions. The cornet duet by two champion players, Messrs. Goodall and Stevenson, was an innovation. Both are experts in 1 cornet work, and their duet, "The Friendly Rivals," so pleased that the recall was most insistent, and they had to repeat the number. The baud's items included the hymn "Bradford," the overture "Bohemian Girl," a selection entitled "Musical Fragments," -as arranged by Douglas, the Scotch air, "Jamie's Patrol," which had also to be repeated, the march '"The Singer" and the "Garland of Flowers," the latter in memory of the late Mrs. J. G. Osborne. It was beautifully interpreted. Mr. M. ;T. Dixon was at the piano as accompanist, and Mr. J. J. Drew wielded the baton as usual.
