Competitions at Auckland

POOR ATTENDANCE OF SPECTATORS.

; AUCKLAND, 4th April. The ambulance men from Auckland, Bydney,- Wanganui, and Masterton met on the Domain to contest the trophies of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, at the largest gathering of ambulance men at work yet seen in Auckland. About fifty spectators were present. The judges were Dr. C. E.'Maguire, medical superintendent at the Auckland Hospital, and Dr. S. L. Ludbrook, assistant-superintendent. Interest centred in the competition for the Overseas Cup, which has been presented by the officers of the ■ Auckland district for; corps for annual competition between the ambulance divisions of St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas. This was the first year of competition for the new cup. There was only one overseas team, the representatives of the Glebe Division, Sydney, Sergeants True, and Goodrich and Corporals Campbell and Brown. Four New Zealand teams, all of Auckland, also entered. One consisted of members of the Auckland ambulance staff, and three were 'entered by the National 'Reserve Divisions. Eight teams (three from each of the Auckland and National Reserve divisions, one from East Town Railway, Wanganui,_ and one from Masterton) took part in the Dominion competition for" the Gaze Cup, held by Auckland. The results were:—

Gaze Cup.—Squad F (Auckland), 87, 1; Squad H (Auckland), 85, 2; East Town Eailways (Wanganui) and National Eeserve, 83, equal, 3. The other teams were placed: Masterton 78, National Eeserve B 69, National Eeserve C 63, Squad D (Auckland) 40.

Intercolonial Cup.—Glebe Division (Sydney), 169, 1; Squad A (National Beserve), 162, 2; Squad B (National Reserve), 159, 3; Squad C (Auckland), 125, 4; Squad D (National Eeserve), 116, 5. There was no question in the minds of the judges about the quality of this competition. All the contestants were good, the closeness of the competitions being indicated by the marks awarded.
