ART IN NEW ZEALAND
AN INTERESTING RECORD.
Does art pay? The National Art Association's balance-sheet shows that it does, with sometimes "a little bit over. lms organisation of local artists has beeu m existence for a short time. It was formed to give artists wider scope in New Zealand than they feb they had before when exhibitions of their work werj confined to the four centres of the Dominion. The important matter of finance—of which art does not seem able to exist without —is dealt with in the association's balancesheet. An exhibition hold a Blenheim yielded a net pro lit of £15 4s 4d, and com*. missions on £lfi7 13s worth of pictures sold gave a modest return of £9 18s 7d. The result of, the year's operations is a balance to the good of £G1 16s Od, a small but encouraging nest egg. Exhibitions of pictures were held at Whangarci, Nelson, Blenheim, Greymouth, Wellington, and Masterton. The-Inchest return from pictures sold was at Blenheim, £56 13s, and the lowest at Wellington, £3. Art news; nn article on "Poetry and painting—their relation," by Mr. Johannes C. Andersen; criticisms on the works r^ W*lsh and Hanson; and illustrations of the works of Kaeburn (locally possessed), Hosa Sawtoll, Elizabeth Kelly, Marcus King (in colour), Ann P. Hewitt, J. Palthorpe, E. B. Fribcrg, M.E. It. Tripe, A. H. O'Keefe, W. S. Wauchop, and Archibald Nicol! adorn the pages of-this particularly interesting issue of the 'association's bulletin. The association records: '"Our thanks arc due to Messrs. Blundell Bros., Ltd., for the skilful work of their engraving and printing departments in the rem'oduction by the three-colour process o£ the picture by Marcus King."
