Saturday's racing did not bring, about »ny very surprising results, either in Australia or New Zealand, but was noteworthy for some sterling performances which should go a long way to show that the deterioration of the thoroughbred is not all that the pessimists would have us believe. So far _as the Dominion was concerned the holiday racing was commenced generally in good weather.

No doubt the star performance in New Zealand on Saturday was Reremoana's Victory with 9.11 in the Auckland Easter Handicap. To carry that weight to the front practically all the way and run out the winner in fast time on a track which was not electric by any means only goes to show what a great horse he is at a mile. There is no doubt he is one of the best middle-distance horses who have ever raced in the Dominion. '

Lysander's victory in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes was' a triumph for the colt's owner and trainer; Mr. G. M. Currie and Walter Rayner, for neither wavered in their belief that Lysander would beat Joy King. The honours are iibw with. Lysander, who has beaten Jpy King twice, while Joy King has beaten Lysander once. It has to be said, however, that when Joy King won he had the best of the weights aud, in addition, Lysander had a cold. At the same time another meeting between the pair would be interesting, but unfortunately it is not possible this year.

The outstanding performance at Randwick on Saturday appeared to be the success of Valicare in the Doncaster Handicap. Not only was this her sixth win in as many starts in the whole of her racing career, but she carried 8.9, or 31b over weight-for-age, a sterling performance in itself. She is in the All-Aged Stakes, weight-for-age, one mile, to be run on Wednesday, and can be pitted against all the cracks. With Valicare in the field, and probably Windbag, The Night Patrol, and Heroic, it should be a great mile. Valicare beat Windbag over nine furlongs at weight-for-age in the Rawson Stakes at Rosehill a fortnight ago, but Windbag would hardly be as fit then as he is now. At the same time he has a big task in front of him to beat the filly. Thick-and-thin supporters of Windbag Would be well pleased with the re,Bult of the Autumn Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, for the Aus-tralian-bred horse finished in front of the New Zealander Pilliewinkie. At the same time Pilliewinkie's Sydney Cup supporters had no reason to be discouraged. The victory of the Victorian filly Cyden In the Sires' Produce Stakes it. Rundwick on Saturday would not surprise many who saw her finish in the V.EC. Sires' Produce Stakes about a month ago. On that occasion she came very fast over the last furlong and had Rampiou doing his best to beat her by a length. JRampion wasi not started again at the meeting, but tyden was produced in the Ascot Vale Stakes which she won easily in Imin 13sec, a race record.
