BOBBY JONES AND COMPSTON
Walter Hagen and Gil Nichols, a New York veteran, were too good for Archie Compston and Arnaud Massy in a match over 36 holes at St. Petersburg, Florida, on 24th January. Compston was playing magnificent golf in the morning and had a round of 71, despite the fact that he missed a dozen putts of six feet or less. Hagen was. 73, Nichols 74, and Massy 78. The Americans' better ball score gave them a lead of two holes in the first half. In the afternoon Hagen was round in 72, Nichols in 74, Compston in 75, and Massy in 73, and the Americans won 3 up and 2 to play. Tho afternoon round was .markable for a great driving duel between. Hagen and Compston. Both men were hitting from the tee for all they were worth and averaged round about 300 yards. The redoubtable Bobby Jones had not long to wait for hig revenge against Compston and Arnaud Massy, who, as reported in this column "a couple of woeks ago, defeated Jones and Watts Gunn 3 vp 1 and 2 to play over. 3 holes at St. Augustine, Florida. The British professional and his famous French colleague collided with the great American amateur again in a 36-holc match on 23rd January, the first eighteen holes being played at Sarasota and the second half at Bradenton, Florida. In this match Jones was partnered by Tommy Armour, formerly.a prominent British amateur;- now a successful professional in the States. This time Jones set a pace which the professionals could not follow. In tho morning he was round in 73. Armour equalled this score, but Compston needed 77 strokes and Massy 76. In the afternoon Jones played par golf or better at all the holes for a 71. Armour's score was 74, Cdmpsion's 79, and Massy's 78. Three up in the morning, the .American combination went pn to win the match 8 up and 7 to play, and the visiting professionals got a taste of the quality of the player who is undoubtedly the beat amateur in the world, and in tho opinion of many is the world's best golfer, amateur or professional. The cards showed that over the 36 holes Jones was 4 up on Armour, 10 up on Compston, and 10 up on Massy.
