INDECENT LITERATURE

DELUGE IN AMERICA,

(United Press Association—Copyright.) (Australian-N«W Zealand Cable Assn.) NEW YORK, 26th March.

The Society for tin Suppression of Vice has published a report in which Magistrates' Courts, the newspapers, .the United State* Post Office, and the Department of Justice are blamed for the deluge of indecent pictures and immoral literature which is flooding the country. The report charges the newspapers, with being in favour of indecency "because they are mainly inteicsted in profits and therefore do not wish to offend large amusement and publication interests." It is alleged that the Courts have strained the construction of the law, by which means accused persons have been acquitted, thereby emboldening producers to further indecencies; that the Post Office fails to sift published matter, thereby carrying much that is corrupting and debased; and that the Department of Justice investigates salacious magazines only upon complaint after distribution, by which time the damage is done.
