TOUR OLD BLUES IN EACH BOAT.

The crews. selected about the middle of last month were as follows, though it is possible there' havo been some changes dm-irtg the six weeks.that have since intervened:—•CAMBRIDGE.

Each of the crews included tlyee Old : Blues, besides each of the coxswains who steered their respective boats last year. Old Blues at the rowlocks in the Cambridge boat were Smith, Ambler, and Tubbs, and those for Oxford wore E. C. Edwards, Thomson, and Pitman. The Cambridgo coxswain, .T. A. Brown, has held the ropes f- • three years now, on each occasion steering his crew to victory.

The contest first took place in 1829, when Oxford -we.ro the winners, but after that no r'aco eventuated .until 1836, Cambridge winning on this occasion. Therq was then a lapse of two years, Cambridge again proving tho victcrs in 1839, since when the' race has taken place overy year, except for the intervention of the war years. Seventyeight races have taken place between the two contesting universities, of which Oxford has won 40 and Cambridge 37, while one race, thnt of 1877, was a doad-hoat. The fastest timo yet recorded v.-as for the race- of IDII, when Oxford, stroked by E. C. Bourne, won in 18min 29sec, exactly a minute faster than that of Saturday's race. Since the Great War Oxford has only once been successful, in 1923, and in very slow time —20min 54sec, while Cambridge students have six wins to their crod.it.

The coachejs responsible this year for the Cambridge crow were Cupt-iu Willis, Messrs. P. J. Eseombc and W. Dudley Ward. The Oxford crow were handled by Mr. Campbell Douglas.

J. B. Bell, who is mentioned in tho cable as1 being the mainstay of the Cambridge crew, is an Australian, born at Geclong, and who is now a'; Jesus College.
