NELSON, 27th March,

The City Council mot on Friday. Present: The Mayor (Mr. AVillam Lock), Councillors Gibbs, Neale, Harley, Nightingale, Stringer, Moffatt, Watson, and Plum. Before commencing the business the Mayor referred to the late Mr. H. V. Gully, a former Town Cleric, who died at Wellington recently, and moved, "That this council places on record its sincere regret at hearing of the death of Mr. 11. V. Gutty, who for 84 years oca-spied the position of Town Clerk to the city, during the whole of which time he carried out his duties ably and faithfully, and earned the esteem and respect of the citizen.;, and extends its sincere condolences to his widow and family." The motion was carried in silence. A motion of sympathy to the widow and family of the late Mr. Edward Christian, who for many years was an empbyee of the council, was also carried. ■ - Among the correspondence received was the following .letter from the managing director. (Mr. C. Milner, of S. Kirkpatrick and Co., applying for a lease for twenty-one years at a peppercorn- rental of a triangular piece of land on Wellington street, now overgrown and unsightly. The company proposed at its own expense to plant the hillside with native and flowering shrubs, ornamental trees, and palms, and make terraces, lay down the flat in lawn, and erect an attractive bungalow type of rest-room for "X" employees. It was decided to refer the matter to a committee. Mr. J. .Corder, of Wakapuaka, wrote stating that steps were being taken to form a power board in the district. An application from the Tahuna glands-Association for free electric light at the sands reserve on Easter Monday was granted. The usoof the Botanical Reserve was granted for the season to tho Hockey Association. Permission to open a picture theatre on Good Friday was declined. The council decided to consider the question of establishing a fire board. ■ The eletcrical engineer (Mr. C. A. Henderson) reported that tho total number of. applications was 1736 and the total load applied for was 2241 kilowatts. ■ Mr. Fleming, his successor, would take up his permanent residence after Easter, and would take charge of the department then. Arising out of a report on th£ recent meeting of locil bodies on the allocation of heavy traffic fees, tho City Engineer pointed out that it was probaWe that in the future the allocations w.ould be-on a mileage basis, and it was resolved that a circular be sent to owners concerned, pointing out their obligations, and that tho collecting of returns bo. tho duty of the traffic inspector. - The Mayor reported that ho had met Mr. Jones (chairman of the Railway Board) as to vesting certain portions of the foreshore in tho city, and that a satisfactory agreement had been come to regarding certain points at issue. It was resolved that the council accept the Railway Department's offer and purchase a portion of Anzac Park for £60. , Replying to a question as to the cost of reconstructing the Nile street traffic bridge, the City Engineer said the cost' was £500, and that totara timber to the value of £120 had been got out of the old structure. The' Hon. W. W. Snodgrass has been, reappointed Government nominee on the Nelson Harbour Board for a further term of three years. Mr. E. E. Boyes (chairman of the Town Schools Committee), who with Mrs. Boyes is leaving shortly on a visit to England, was met by his fellow.nie.mbcrsrthls week and presented with two deck chairs and '.cushions:
