KUO MIN-CHUN'S RETREAT

STEONGHOLD FOB BAIDS ON PEKIN.

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Reuter's Telegram.) (Received 24th March, 11 a.m.) PEKIN, 23rd March. The retreat of Kuo Min-chun on all fronts was due partly to shortage of ammunition, expected supplies not having arrived. Additional Kuo Min-chun troops have reached Fengtai and Tungchow, where prolonged rearguard actions are expected. There are considerable Kuo , Minchun concentrations in the Nankow Pass.north-west of Pekini Kuo Minchun forces in the Jehol region, which is north-east of Pekin, are falling back on Nankow. The Nankow region is extremely mountainous and the Nankow^ Pass is a long, narrow defile. If Kuo Min-chun abandons Pekin to retire there, it will be extremely difficult to dislodge him, while he will always be in a position to make Taids from Nankow against Pekin.
