The ship John Wickiiffe, the first of two vessels that brought out pioneers to the Otago settlement, arrived «t Port Chalmers on 23rd March, 18.18. Yesterday was, therefore, the scventyeighth anniversary of the founding of - the settlement. It was observed as a holiday in Dunedin—a holiday of distinctive character, for though the duy is not on the Arbitration Court's list of holidays, few men were seen st work and trade camu to a complete standstill, shops and warehoused being closed; Act'ive signs of the holiday • .ibout town were the flying of flags and ' the moving about of trams and buses "■ and trains to suit the demands of tt>3S« > who wanted to get away for picnics. Otherwise the city was as quiet as M a Sunday. . ..-. .
