CANTERBURY MARKETS
(By Telegraph. —freas Association.) ■ ' ■ eHKISTCHURCH, ■ 23rd" jtfarch,. Generally the grain and seed business is dull. Clovers,' cocksfoot, ryegrass, and oats come under--this description.. ; Merchants' have .-stocks ■on hand for- which there is.little inquiry, and.naturally they are "going slowly' 'in the process of. adding to them. Activity in. the potato market'lias eased off, Australian inquirers having' withdrawn. Last week there were some sold, for export at-£8 los-to1.-.£9 per ton,.but this figure is no.t available. to-dajy. It 33 noted that about 4000 tons have been used for shipment to the North Island. Business is small, but some' sales have taken place on the basis of £7 12a.6d, f.0.b., s.i., for May. It is understood that a'ooat will be put on at the : end. of. April to ship the Sydney purchases. In the meantime grow-., era are showing a: freer disposition to sell, but whereas £6 a ton on trucks was available last week,- £5 15s is the' quotation -to^ day, and £5 lOs-for May delivery.' Onions have taken another jump up, due, to some.extent, to further Australian inquiry. Several cphsigfimentes have already. been shipped. A3 high a price as £11 10s on trucks was paid to-day. There are very few'oats being "offered, but none are being inquired for, and values are unchanged. " The necessity of filling orders for boats leaving within a, week or so .has Strengthened values for prompt delivery of peas, Hndiip to 6s 3d on trucks ha3 been paid. This ' figure, however, ia 3d per bushel: above Home, parity. The yield is not so heavy as was expected in the thrashings 'so far, but the sample is exceptional, and the bulk of the crop' promises to lie of good export'"quality. Wheat is .drifting steadily, if somewhat slowly, into'millers' hands, .at the quotations, of O.s 8d to 7s, f.o.b. The disposals, however, have slackened over the pajst few days.
