IMPROVED ACCESS

ROSENEATH AND EASTERN HATAJTAI

A FURTHER RECOMMENDATION TO BE MADE,

Referring to-day to expressions of dissatisfaction on the part of some residents ■of Boseneath at the progress and scopo of the work to give "improved access to Roseneath" (which is H iite the most frequently quoted phrase from the loan schedule of 1920), the Mayor (Mr. C. B. Norwood) went over the ground leading to the present position, and. statod that it was his intention to make a further recommendation to the council, for its approval or otherwise, as to additional work which would connect up Carlton Gore road with Eastern Hataitai. The council, he said, was definitely committed to improved .iceesß to Roseneath; the lift Scheme was not proceeded with, and something had to be given in its place. That something was the improvement of the Carlton Gore road. It was recognised when the lift was put forward that it would not pay its way and that tha Tramways Department would consequently be faced with a considerable annual loss, and w'len a change of plan was decided upon it was agreed that that loss should be .capitalised and that that amount shoujd be the department's contribution towards the road work. The loan moneys provided a big part of the cost, and tho remainder wag made up out of the general fund. . Those who expressed dissatisfaction were under the impression from some remarks he had made, continued Mr. Norwood, that thu council was rinishing off the work at its present point, that "improved access" would tot go any further. He believed, however, that if there was a good road leading to the Eastern Hataitai district all wheel traffic would run that way rather than round by Constable street, and it wa3 his intention to recommend the council to deal with tho question of improved access to Roseneath and beyond in a. little more comprehensive way than had previously been done.
