HUTT RIVER BOARD
A-meeting of the Hutt Eiver Board was held on Wednesday afternoon. Present: Messrs. W. T. Strand (chairman), J. Mitchell, J. Mabey, S. Clendon. The Engineer of Railways wrote stating that the Department would undertake the clearing of the Waiwetu stream from the Wainui Bridge to the estuary, and the charge would be borne by the Department. It was decided, to write and thank the engineer for the very satisfactory arrangements made. Messrs. Wilkinson and others (HallJones Settlement) petitioned that the Waiwetu stream be cleared out, and it was resolved to carry out the work. The matter of taking over the control of all streams and water-courses was held over for" further consideration until nest meeting. The engineer (Mr. Sladden) reported that arrangements had been made to clear, the Waiwetu stream of logs and such willows as obstructed the stream from the Wainui Bridge downwards. When this was finished, in about a fortnight, the scetion above-Wainui Bridge would be proceeded _ with. Certain weeping willows, which it would be a pity to destroy, and which would • not obstruct the stream, would remain. The Silverstream Gorge wash-out was visited, and the engineer said he was not quite satisfied with the work carried out by the County Council, and was in touch with the County Engineer in connection with it. "The development of the required channel below Andrews's was'-having the effect of directing floods against the high bank, and would probably cause erosion, and cutting in behind Speedy's weir.' This weir required two spurs about one chain long to arrest undermining. ' It was decided that all work recommended by the engineer be carried out.
