GIRLS LIVING WITH CHINESE.

A pitiful state of affairs was revealed in cases which were called on before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Two young girls were charged with vagrancy, and. it was stated by Chief Detective Ward that both had been frequenting , the places of different Chinese.

Lena Hineinoa Hamilton, 20 years of age, pleaded not guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person. In asking for a remand for one week, the Chief Detective stated that the girl had been associating with Chinese, and he desired to communicate with her parents at Hawera. The remand was granted.

Beatrice Alice Hayes pleaded guilty to a similar charge. "This girl is seventeen years of age," said the Chief Detective, "and for about two years past she has been living with different Chinese, and she is now in a certain condition. Her parents are divorced, and are living apart. The girl has been in Wellington at different times with her grandmother, but it has not been possible to exercise any control over her. Her only means is the money she receives from the Chinese with whom she has been living." '

Mrs. Glover, Probation Officer, suggested that the Salvation Army would take care of the girl, and the Magistrate stood the case down until this afternoon.

This afternoon the girl was ordered to be detained. at Point Halswell for a period of three years.
