OTAKI HOSPITAL
PALMERSTON BOARD WITHDRAWS
ITS GUARANTEES.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALMERSTON ST., This Day. v The Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday decided to advise the Health Department that it proposes to withdraw its guarantee of fees for patients in the Qtaki Hospital as from Ist April. A report was received from Dr. Valintine, Director-General ■ of Health, on the subject, in which he said that it would be better in the patients' interests that the Otaki institution should be closed. He recognised there were local difficulties in the matter, but if the board decided to withdraw its guarantees the Department would not advance any objections. Eventually the premises will be used merely as an emergency hospital. The board has for long objected to the expense of the maintenance of the Otaki Hospital, but an agitation in the southern part of the board's district has apparently succeeded in keeping it open, though in the future the Department will be responsible for its upkeep.
