NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BY "VEDETTE.")

AT NEW PLYMOUTH

YOMA'S TARANAKT CUP

A BLEAK DA%

The Twanaki Meeting was opened yesterday in-anything but summer weather, for the- day was ushered in with, heavy rain showers, which lasted throughout the day, but they, were of short duration. There wag a bitterly cold wind, which made matters very unpleasant. The course was in fair order considering the heavy rain overnight • There was a good attendance, all things considered, and betting was fairly spirited, the totalisator turnover showing a decrease of only £456. After the race for the Taranaki Cup Mr. Newton King presented the trophy to Mr. A. W. Budge, the owner of Yoma. Yoma won in great style, in good time, the race being solidly run from end to tend, with the horses changing positions m practically every furlong. After the race it was discovered that the Cup field had been started from the wrong barrier, and that the distance covered was actually one mile and a half and 110 yards, or 110 yards too far. It was decided, however, to let the result stand, although part 25, paragraph 9, of tile rules, states, inter alia, that if a race be run over a wrong distance the race , shall be run again. Barry, the rider of Oration in the Juvenile Handicap, was fined £20 for wearing a lead waistcoat, a contravention of part 23, paragraph 3, of the Rules of Racing. A protest on behalf of Toapaiti, the runner-up' to Oration, was also entered against the connections of the latter horse receiving first prize, on account of this 'breach of the rules. This matter is to be decided on Saturday. ■' E. George's stable was in form, supply-, ing winners in Oration and Nastori and a dead-heater in Mint Leaf, while Hipo finished second and Te Monanui and Willow Wai ran fair races. WAITARA HURDLES. Kmwh wound up favourite, wjth Saa Fera and Bustler nearly as well backed, and Bonny Rill the only., other supported to any extent. Uncle Dave led, to the first fence from Bonny. Rill, White Ranger, and Sunny Vale, but at the stand White Ranger had charge from Uncle Dave, Sun- - ny Yale, Bonny Rill, Ratapiko, and Mountain Bell. White Ranger was joined by Mountain Bell in the back straight, with Sunny Vale, Bustler, Sansalino, and Bonny.Rill most prominent of the others. Bustler raced, past the leaden half a mile • from home, and led into the straight from Mountain Bell, Koauau, San Fera, Bonny Rill, and Sansalino. Bustler and Koauau were on terms at the last fence, with San Fera right up with them, and in the run in Bustier won by half a .length from Koauau, with San Fera three-quarters of a length away third. Sansalino was fourth, and Mountain Bell, Santiago, and Bonny Rill nest. , Form pointed to the 'placed horses, and in the end, luck favouring Bustler most, he won, but he had little to spare. He was third to last in the first 'half-mile. San Fera was the most unlucky of the three, for he did ont get clear until very • late, and did well under his big weight. Sansalino ran a fair race, and Mountain Bell agaiS showed plenty of pace. She will be ridden by an experienced horseman oft Saturday, and should do better. ' .Santiago surprised by finishing well np after being tailed off: for the first mile. Outside of the placed Mountain Bell looks the best second day proposition^'.' •: " JUVENILE HANDICAP. Oration was a very hot favourite, with Adavale the only other * backed. Oration*' Sea Star, and Flying Shot began best from Toapaiti and Adavale. Sea Star soon lost her place, and Oration led to the turn from Flying Shot, Toapaiti, Adavale, and Sea Star. Toapaiti challenged the leader in the straight, but Oration.went on to' win easily by two lengths from Toapaiti, with Sea Star a head away third. Gold Collector was fourth, and Flying Shot and Orcades next. ' ; '■"■ii',» Although Oration won, there was little merit in his performance, arid he was galloping anything Dut generously all the way. Down the straight Toapaiti hung on very well,, while Sea Star came again into third place. Adavale raced very badly. FLYING HANDICAP. Le Choucas was the eventual favourite, but only by seven tickets, from Sleet, with a. number'of others well backed. Lady ißentiiick, Papaponga, and Sleet were the ifirsfto break the line, while Le Choucas /•was left. At the end of a furlong Papa- * ponga was well clear of Lady Bentinck, with The Lamb, Sleet, Pelham, Pouma, and Hipo following in that order. Papaponga was headed by First Acre just at the turn, where Hipo, Sleet, and The Lamb were also handy. First Acre went on to win'rather easily by. three-quarters of a length from Hipo, who. defeated Sicet by nearly two lengths. The Lamb was fourth, and Papaponga, Lady Bent'.nck, and Pouma next. First Acre scored very nicely, keeping up his - great record for consistency. He was looking in great order, and was particularly well handled by R, Reed. Hipo ran his best race for some time, and was "always in the picture. Sleet jumped out well, and appeared to have everVchance to turn, but she is only a little filly to race in the middle of a but field, and received a bad bump about a furlong from home. The Lamb, Papaponga, and Lady Bentinck always held good positions, particularly Papaponga, who had a great advantage at one stage. Le Choucas got away badly, and lost all his chance at the start. He should not be forgotten, for he is very well. MOTUROA HACK RACE. Cloeoamit was favourite, and not by much from Nastori, with Royal Land also well supported. Nastori began beat, and led across the top from Aropeta, Sovena, Whenoawri, Royal Land, and Cocoanut. Nartori was joined by Sovena at the torn, with Aropeta and Royal Land handy, and Whenuanui and Cocoanut next. Nastori had to be ridden, right out to defeat Sovena by a neck, with Royal Land a bare half-length away third. Whe^ nuanui was fourth, and Toy Box, Aropeta, and Cocoanut next. ' - Nastori, who was a decided tip, was anything bat a certainty, and had to bo desperately ridden to win. Sovena ran a great deal better than at Hawera, and finished just too well for Royal Land. The latter was expected to show up well, but was a little unlucky in the. straight. In a bumping finish Cocoanut failed to jump out, and was always in trouble. Of the others Whenuanui showed the most promise. TARANAKI CUP. ! Te Monanui was a good favourite, Nvith Star Ranger a little better backed' than Town Bank, Yoma being at an outside price. Imperial Spark led out of the barrier from Town Bank, Income, Surveyor, and Te Monanui, with Star Ranger last. Surveyor and Yoma led into Cie straight from Imperial Spark and Te Monanui, with Muraahi, Star Ranger, Town Bank, and Income following in* that order. Te Monanui improved his place in the straight, and, with Surveyor, led into the back stretch from Muraahi and Yoma, with Star Ranger and Town Bank commencing to move up. Yoma made a fast run from the half-mile post, and actually led round the home turn from Town Bank, Surveyor, Imperial Spark, Te Mona- * nui, and Star Ranger. Yoma in the end ■mm very easily by three lengths from Town Bank, who defeated Imperial Spark by three-quarters of a length. Te Monairrii was a close fourth, and Income, Star Ranger, and Surveyor following in that order. " ' The race, although the time was slow, was run at a very much faster pace than that at Hawera. Yoma won very decisively at the end, making light of his impost of 7.3. Town Bank was ridden a patient race by G. H. Goldfinch, but had no chance with Yoma at the end. Imperial Spark- looked to have a chance at the turn, and 1 he failed'just ■ in the-final pinch.' Tp }T<- -:=■: -lr; 10-l;?'l well? and . ■ OOSSt' . ...H

always in a good position, but he found his 9.7 on the heavy track too much. Income, Star Ranger, and the rest were well beaten at the end. ■ ; OKATO HACK HANDICAP. Mint Leaf was a very decided favourite, with' .Vaward and Lady Anstruther nearly equally backed. Vaward was the first out froia Anchor, JJint Leaf, Mountain Top, Arolo, and Royal Mint. Going into the back straight the order was Vaward, Anchor, Mint Leaf, Mountain Top, and Fire Brigade. At the home turn Vaward and Mint Leaf were nearly on terms, with Anchor, Fire Brigade and Lady Anstruther/ handy. Vaward was challenged, by Mint Leaf when in line for home, arid after a desperate battle the judge awarded a dead heat—a fair decision. Lady Anstruther was four lengths away third, and Fire Brigade, Royal Mint, and Anchor next. Both dead heaters had raced well in the Nolan ' Cup, and Vaward had had to be pulled up owing to the accident. He hung on very well, and it was only in the last stride- that Mint Leaf reached him to make a dead heat. Lady Anstruther was slow in the early stages, and was running on at the end. v Fire Brigade < raced a particularly good race, and finished a close fourth. Anchor and. Royal Mint raced just fair races. MIMI WELTER. Daylight just had the call for favouritism over Bright Day, with Irapuka a good third choice. Euchre, Daylight, Shut Eye, and Rehntai were the first to break the line, with Bay Dighton last. Euchre led across the top from Shut Eye, Daylight, Attractive, and Irapuka. Shut Eye led to the turn from Euchre, Daylight, Attractive, and Bright Day. Daylight settled Shut Eye 100 yards from home, and had to be ridden right "out to. defeat Bright Day, who finished very fast, by a neck. Rehutai, who" came again, was half a head away third, and Irapuka, Shut Eye, and' Attractive practically in line next. Daylight won, but he had nothing to spare, and it was. a great finish, with «rx horses spread right across the course, and leas than two lengths dividing 1 them. Bright Day carried bis 10.8 like a champion, -for he was a long way back in the early, stages, yet was galloping very wall at the end. Rehutai finished in again after 1 dropping right out in the middle stages. Shut Eye just failed over the last 50 yards, but. he had every chance and the inside running. Euchre went well enough to, be kept in mind. Attractive raced another very fair race. Irapuka was not well placed early and finished right up. '. ' ■•;..-' . . TIMARU HACK HANDICAP. - Willow Wai was favourite in a: good betting race, there, being plenty of support for Glengariff and Royal Form, and the winner turned up in Monaghan, who was at a liberal price. Argue /was the first to, show out from Monaghan, Glengariff, Curraghmore, Royal Form, and Lucernal, with Willow Wai and Partaga slow away. Crossing the top Argue was four lengths clear of Monaghan and Willow Wai, then three lengths further back coming Curraghmore, Glengariff, and Lucernal. At the straight entrance Argue was still the pilot from Monaghan, Willow Wai, Partaga, and Glengariff. Although Monaghan ran about in the straight, he was able to,beat Royal Form by three-quarters of a length, with Partaga a head away third. Glengariff was fourth, and Willow Wai and Curraghmore well up next. Monaghan won without the semblance of a fluke in the end, but Royal Form, Willow Wai, and Partaga had none of tho luck of the race. , Glengariff began well with his big load, but the most likely one to expect to improve is Curraghmore. Willow Wai showed plenty of speed, and Argue, as usual; galloped very fast for five furlongs, and then stopped just as quickly. , DETAILS.
