UPPER HUTT TOWN BOARD

LAST MEETING BUT ONE.

As the new Upp«r Hutt Borough Council will meet for the first time on the 26th of this month, the Town Board will only sit once more. At last night's meeting of that body it was decided that Monday, 22nd February, be chosen for the last meeting, as the regular date would be the night prior to the poll. .In answer to a letter, of inquiry, the board received a reply from -the City Treasurer, stating that heavy traffic fees would be distributed to local bodies after 31st March. The letter was received, several members expressing dissatisfaction, as they considered that the City Council would have had the use of the money for six months.

A letter from the Lower Hutt Borough Council again soliciting the board's support for a hospital in the Hutt Valley brought the reply that the board satf no reason to alter its decision previously given against the establishment of such an institution.

The Hutt County Council wrote asking for an adjustment of-accounts occasioned by the formation of the new borough. It was stated in the letter that the adjustment should be made by 31st March, otherwise it would' delay the estimates. The chairman (Mr. A. J. M'Curdy) Raid that the County Council rarely had their estimates ready before August, or the Town Board before May, and that in any case the matter was one for the incoming council. A motion referring the adjustmerit to the new council was- carried.

Sister M. Ambrose, of the local Catholic Orphanage, wrote asking that the discount on the rates (£56 17a 6d) be granted, although, through mislaying the accounts, they had "not been paid until after the last day for discount. The chairman said that it was impossible to give discount after the due date, but a rebate could be granted, and, under the circumstances this was agreed to, the sum being 27s 6d.

, The captain of the Fire Brigade reported that there was 450 ft of fire hoße at the Upper Hutt Station ' and 250 ft at Trentham. Both lengths were in good repair. The treasurer's report up to 30th January showed a debit balance, fcut the chairman remarked that by 31st March there should be a credit balance for. the board's accounts resulting from items now outstanding and adjustment of borough accounts. He agreed with Commissioner Jones that some sort of financial statement should be placed before the board before it disbanded, and promised to bring forward the necessary information at the next, and last, meeting.
