NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL.

The moirthjy meeting of the New Zealand Golf: Association's Council was* held last evening, those, present being Messrs. R. C. Kirk (chairman), J. B. MacEwan, A, D. S. Duncan, A. J. Abbott, W. E. A. Gill, Captain A. E. Conway, and Mr. G. O. Button (secretary). ' A financial statement was presented showing a balance of £116 at the National Bank, and of £514 at the Saving! Bank. There were a few subscription* stjll outstanding. , 'An inquiry was'- made as to whether the association has ever drawn up a standard set of rules for the guidance of committees. It was decided to reply that it would be impracticable to do this, as the conditions in the clubs varied bo much, but that the chairman would always be very pleased to go. over the draft of any proposed rules which a club may submit.

It was reported that the Hastings Golf Club had written to the chairman asking for certain advice with regard to the laying out of their course of over six thousand yards. The chairman replied that, strictly speaking, it is not desirable to sacrifice everything for greater length, and that the council would never turn down for championship purposes a well-kept and well-balanced and bunkered course for the reasonv only that. it. did not total six thousand yards. The club had also been recommended to secure the services of the professional, Lindsay Ross, who had had .considerable experience in course construction. ' An affiliated club inquired as to when the new additions to rules 22 and 23 came into force, and they had been advised that they came into force immediately, this always' being the case in the absence of any statement from St. Andrew's to the contrary. ; • A decision was made to forward £150 to the Otago Golf Club this week. Tin chairman reported that he purposed going down to be present at the Otago professional tournament, for which the money was advanced., The secretary reported that-, applications for the association professional* were now coming in for.their services, and during the next few weeks a.programme would, be drawn up for both men for th» season. ■ •■
