PORTFOLIO OF MINES
A LETTER CAUSES AMUSEMENT.
(By Tileirtph.) (Special to "Tho Evening Port.")
i» AUCKLAND, This Day.
At a meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council last week and at Thursday's meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council at Paeroa, the following letter was received from the Coromandel County Council relative to the portfolio of Mines, with tho request that if the county was in sympathy with the object it would support the request by approaching tho Prime Minister. The letter read as follows:—"I am taking the liberty of approaching you on the question of the portfolio of Mines. It is the opinion of the majority of mining men hero that the present Minister of Mines does not understand the requirements of the Hauraki mining district. Mr. T. W. Rhodes, M.P., has a thorough knowledge of ite requirements, the whole of his life having been spent between Coromandel and Thames. Mr. Bhodcs acted as registered mining agent here for about twenty-five years, and was also personally interested in numerous mining ventures. Ho is a man of untiring energy, and his extonsive knowledge of mining law and usage would enable him to administer the portfolio with justico and discretion," Members were visibly amused at the request. It was resolved to take no action, as the matter was not one that the council was prepared to support.
