Dr. Andrew Thomson,. director of the Apia Observatory, who is in Melbourne in regard to the question of meteorological co-ordination between Australia, New Zealand, * and Samoa, says that Western Samoa, under British control and the administration of the New Zealand Government, has changed greatly in- character.
Since tlio depression of 1921 the western areas have developed steadily. The former large German plantations a-^ realising profits of niora than £25,000 a —<ar. Last year the population increased by over a thousand. This, he s;iys, is due to the improved medical treatment and the assistance of Dr. E. Roberts, wife of Ihe American Consul, and Dr. Mabel Christie. Both these women doctors visit the villages. There are now more than 250 native nurses scattered throughout the island. . ■
