FIRES AT RAETIHI

THE COUNTRYSIDE ABLAZE.

EAETIHI, 22nd January.

In consequence of a heavy wind of almost hurricane force, many people hastily left the Eaetihi sports. Fires are spreading in all directions, and the road between Ohakune and Eaetihi is impassable. Several houses are reported to have been burnt, and several refugees have reached Kaetihi. ■

The wind has changed, and now threatens Baetihi with bush fires. The trains will probably be blocked for some hours at least. Many people will have to stay in Eaetihi to-night, as they are unable to get home. The last car to-night through the Eaetihi-Ohakune road reports that the passage is now impassable. The wooden bridge is burning fiercely, and houses occupied by Messrs. Howard, Williamson, and Marsh are reported to have been burnt. Many other dwellings are in imminent danger. Horopito, Bangataua, and Pokaka are also in danger. >
