PALMERSTON N;, This Day.
Mr. D. F. Wilber, formerly United States Consul-General to Ney Zealand, who recently returned to the Dominion on a holiday tour, has been in Palmerston North taking farewell o£ friends in this town. Mr. Wilber was accompanied by Mr.- W. S. .Whipple, of New York. They will spend about ten days at Tokaanu before'going to Rotorua. Later, thejs will join the Aorangi, wheii she sails early next nionth for Sydney, en route to the United States.
A very old Canterbury pioneer, Mrs. Elizabeth Knowles,. who in former years was well known m Palmerston North, died at Stanley Bay, Auckland, aged 91). Soou after, her arrival in the Dominion she met nearly all the prominent men connected with the Parliamentary life of New Zealand, and never ceased to take the greatest interest in all political matters. ' • ■ . . .
The advance being made by the Bainesse Co-operative Dairy Company for December supplies is Is 8d per 1b of butter-fat. Mr. H. Bond, chairman of directors of the company, which is a cheese-manufacturing concern, states that the company had a very good season, despite the climatic conditions that had iseverely- affscted some quarters of the Manawatu. In his opinion, cheese factories were in a much better position at the present time than buttcrmanufacturing concerns., ■ • The property market maintains a healthy tone in this district. According to land agents, there is a steady demand for farm land, but the trouble is to get land which is worth the money asked for it.' The prices of houses are not coming down. There is a fair demand for five or sis-roomed dwellings, for which £1000 to £1400 is asked. Though houses are.selling readily, there is still a great shortage of dwellings.
