NEW ZEALAND AND INDIA LEAGUE

The above league held, its seventh annual meeting in Wellington on 29th December, with Mr. B. Yeates, president of the league, in the chair. The chairman in- his opening remarks explained that the league existed for the purpose of helping Empire work in India. Lord "Willington, formerly Governor of Bombay, had stated his opinion that the time had fully come for co-operation between the white and the dark races. Dr. Besant, president of the Theosophical Society, who upheld the ideal of brotherhood without distinction o$ race, cre,ed, caste, or colour, was working hard for the improvement of Indian conditions in the interests of the Empire. Although Mrs. Besant was now 79 years of age, she worked from 12 to 18 hours a, day. She had been called "a leader and a maker of leaders."
