FIRE IN BLENHEIM

BLENHEIM, This Day.

Two shops in the business quarter of the town were totally destroyed by fire at 2.30 this morning, one occupied by William Bateman, cycle dealer, and the other by Mervyn Patchett, confectioner. Both were practically burnt out before an alarm was given. The brigade made a remarkable save of the adjoining buildings. The shops were owned by J. B. Kay;ner, and one was insured for £375, including the plate-g*!ass and fixtures, and the other for £270, including the plate-glass, both in the Bhoneix office. Bateman's stock was insured for £350 in the Phoenix:, office. Patehett's stock was insured for £600 in the Prudential Office. Tho adjoining Khops, owned by S. Adams and Mrs. .T. Hood, and occupied by Mrs. M. Scollard and K, and J. Walton, both ladies' outfitters, were slightly damaged by smoke and water. The outbreak started in the rear of Patch ett's shop, but its origin is unknown.
