THE MAHIA CASE
CRISIS DEFERRED FOR A DAY,
_ . BBISBANE, 27th October. It is reported from Gladstono that a conference between the captain of tho Mahia, representatives of the strikers and the crew, and the head of the police, discussed the position. It was stated that the Brisbane strike committee had telegraphed' emphatically declining to permit coal to be placed aboard any British steamer.
Mr. Williams stated that coal was now available, ample police protection was promised, and the farmers were determined not to allow'the meat on tho Mahia to perish.
One of the strikers declared that if Captain Williams put on free labour he would have to accept the responsibility for any bloodshed, lie added that the matter lay in the hands of the Brisbane and uot the local strike corn-
