AUSTRALIAN LADIES IN ACTION
EAIN SPOILS PLAY.
The promise of fair weather for, the tennis matches in which the visiting Australians are participating was spoilt by southerly squalls this morning which necessitated an adjournment in the programme. The games were timed to commence at 10.30 o'clock on the Wellington Club's courts, but rain interfered with play, and only one set was played, after which the progra.umo was postponed till this afternoon.
This morning two of the Australian ladies' touring team were seen in action with two New Zealand ladies, and the hundred or so spectators who visited the courts were treated to a sparkling display of tennis. Miss Eoyd (Victoria) was paired with Miss B. Nkholls (Auckland) against Mrs. Harper (Australia) and Miss Partridge (Canterbury). Miss Nicholls is the holder of the girls' championship of New Zealand, and Miss Partridge is second on tl I Canterbury Association's ladder. Airs.-Harper and Miss Partridge were too strong for their opponents in the earlier stages of the play, when they were leading 5-2, but Miss Boyd and Miss Nicholls played a great uphill game, and eventually won a set of nine up advantage, 10-8. Miss Akhurst (N.S.W.) and Miss Speirs (Christchureh) met Mrs. Scott (Timaru) and Miss Ballantyno (New Plymouth), but rain caused a stoppage : of play when the games were 2-2.
This afternoon, J. 0. Anderson (Australian Davis Cup representative) and Noel Wilson (Wellington) will meet C. Ollivier (Ghristchurch) and E. D. Andrews (Palmcrston N.). After the doubles, Anderson will play Ollivier, and subsequently he wiil meet Andrews.
Ollivier is the present New Zealand champion', and Andrews is ■ the holder of the Wellington provincial championship. Wilson is a promising young local player. ' • '
As the Tahiti does not sail till tomorrow evening, the visiting ladies have signified their willingness in playing in invitation matches to-mor-row.
