The newspapers are absorbed by the political crisis. After the speech made by M. Caillaux they say that only a miracle will prevent the Cabinet resigning. M. Herriott, in a speech, declared that the time for physicians was past, and it was necessary for surgeons to in-
tervene.
As the result of this, M. Briand is strongly supporting M. Caillaux, because lie does not desire.it Ministerial crisis at the time when tho Council of the League of Nations is meeting in Paris. A crisis will possibly be prevented, or at least postponed. The Council of Ministers has postponed its meeting until to-morrow. Cabinet is still discussing the financial project. There was ;i stormy scene at a meeting of M. l'aiulevc^ M. Briand, M. Caillaux, and M. Caillaux's chief supporter, M. Laval, iv the Premier's private room, before the Cabinet meeting. According to the. Havas News Agency, M. Painleve asked M. Caillaux to resign, and the latter refused, whereupon M. Painleve is reported to have replied that he would be obliged to submit the collective resignation of the Cabinet. M. Caillaux objected to this course, adding that tho idea clearly was to enable M. Painleve to reconstruct the Cabinet without M. Caillaux.
The trouble ended with the adoption of M. Brinnd's suggestion that the question should be deferred pending a discussion by the whole of the Cabinet.
