HON. A. D. M'LEOD OPENS
CAMPAIGN.
OARTERTON, This Day. .: The Hon. A. D. M'Leod opened his campaign for the Wairarapnseat at Carterton last night, when there was a large attendance. He defended the Government against charges of extravagance iiid wastefulness, and challenged his opponents to come into the open. He instanced the progress' made in roading, settlement, housing, and the telephone service, and in the settlement of soldiers in the land. Tho expenditure had been big, but fully justified. Regarding fusion, he still held to his policy that he would be no party to a bargain between die two parties without the consent of tho people. If his party was returned and was found lacking a working majority _ ho would willingly drop his Ministerial position and assist in negotiations for the establishment of a sound and stable Government if the will of ths people pointed in that direction. He referred to tho shipping strike, and said that the Government was doing the best it could to reach a settlement. The speech was well. received, and Mr. M'Leod was accorded a hearty, vote- of thanks.
