NELSON, 15th September.

Thp Nelson City Council'« fortnightly meeting was held on Friday evening. Present: Councillors E. K. Neale, W. C. Harley, A. G. Nightin--5 ale, J. A. Stringer, J. Wigzell, W. .Moffatt, B. Watson, and F. Plum. The Mayor (Mr. W. Lock),: who was absent in "Wellington, was excused, also Councillor Gibbs, who - ( was indisposed. Councillor Moffatt was voted to the chair. . ..'

A strong deputation from the Nelson Exhibition Committee waited on the council requesting an increased contribution to the Exhibition fund.

Mr. A. Gould explained the position and the developments that had taken place since the original grant of £200 had been made by the-council, and, stated a further £.400;..: was needed. The^Wainiea County Council had at the; request of the committee increased its contribution. ■ '/.-,

The Hon. W. W. Snodgrass said the new arrangement to work with Wellington offered a. unique opportunity for Nelson to advertise its advantages aiid attractions. He had visited the Exhibition buildings, and was surprised r and astonished at the enterprise of the.Dunedin people. Mr. Fi 0. Hamilton said it would be almost' a disgrace or a calamity if Nelson was not adequately represented at the^ Exhibition. .= He had recently visited Dunedin) ( and was surprised at the magnitude of the work. He suggested" another; £100^ be given; and the 1 whole amount (£ 300) be put on the. estimates next year. ..He also/thought, the' Mayor should be present before the -matter; was finally decided. .Councillor Moffatt saidthe council would be justified; in treating the matter as one of urgency,, but'he;would not oppose the proposal to defer the matter until the' Mayor's return. In no other place than Kelson* were private subscriptions being solicited, but the 'whole of the contributions of other places were being made out of rates. The committee of the whole reported on letters from Messrs. S. Kirkpatrick and Co. and i.Grif&ns, Ltd., as to' charges for water by meter :•-.
