VOTES ON THE ESTIMATES.

A number of items of local interest, and some of general importance, appear on the Public "Works Estimates.

.:. A vote;of £5000, on account, is made for the 'new ■ wing of the . Parliament Buildings. ' : '.'.-

A new contribution of £5000 is voted towards the coat of erecting the building fpr the Jubilee Institute for.'the Blind at Auckland, « . .;.'■• > ' ■ Additions to the KhandaJlah auto-' matic telephone exchange are estimated to cost £1000. A turn of £10,000 is provided for additions to the post-office .at" Palmerston North, £570,f0r additional store accommodation, and £325 for temporary -accommodation, fittings, /etc. -A further sum, of £10,000, on, account, is voted' in connection. with the poet office* site and; additions at Marton'. For the purpose! of the automatic telephone. i»x-> change, additions, and acquiring further land. at. Courtenay place, a vote-, of £5000 is mad*. Other local post and telegraph items are. £1000, on account, for additions to the 1 Wellington V, South automatic telephone exchange, £100 for the automatic telephone, exchange..and additional 'land .at • Kelburn, £IfOO for the Stout street automatic 'exchange, and £1250 for.the Khandallah exchange. In addition unexpended amounts, specified'in last year's Estimates arelrenew:. Ed in, respect to Eastbourne (£3500), Hataitaij£2so, on account), Island Bay (£250), Karori (£250 on account), Kelburn (£250), and Stout street • (£6700). The cost of the new dairy laboratory at Wallacevffle is estimated :at £4300, and: of the proposed: small-butter and cheese factory £3800. '-„ '. ' •1 ■ A Last year a sum of £48,000 was.voted for expenditure at Porirua Mental Hospital, but only £18,374 was expended. This year the. vote is increased to ;£77,000. The erection of- buildings . for hospital boards throughout, New Zealand is estimated to cost. £5000,, all of which is recoverable from boards.
