The scheduled fifteen-round professional fight between R. Vercoe, Bst. 1341b (Marlborough), and Derry -Clinton,' Bst 111b (Palmarston North) ended somewhat sensationally; in- the ninth round. Erom the first gong the battle'was hard and strenuous, tho local man having a shade the best of the . exchanges. In the sixth round Vercoe had Cintori nearly gone on': the ropes ■ twice, and the gpng/waa a .welcome sound to the Pal- fmenifon lad. Clinton; niadei ,ai good recovery and mixed things lively in the seventh, and eighth'rounds. In. ; the ninth both, men ■ were fighting fast, and just \as the' gong sounded Vercoe fell squirming. ; It did hot appear as though •Clinton hid hit low ; with-his hands, but apparently, hii knee had come into', play inadvertently. The referee pronounced the fight, byer, and: after, a conference with three doctors, -who examined Vercoe, gave the decision against Clinton on a foul.
