(Received 29th August, 11.50 a.m.)

Mr. Bruce, speaking on the second reading of the Peace Officers' Bill, said the Commonwealth had approached the New South Wales Ministry asking if there would be any objection to the Commonwealth approaching the Chief Justice of New South Wales) asking for the use of one of the Supreme Court Judges for the Deportation Board.
The reply was that there was no necessity for the Commonwealth Ministry to deport certain persons' from Australia. The Commonwealth had means for carrying out the object it desired, and New South Wales refused to be embroiled in these proceedings, as it considered the Commonwealth was trying to involve New South . Wales for political purposes.
At midnight the Bill was read the second time by 32 votes to 19.
