A FREAK DINNER
WHILE CAMELS ROLLED,
One of those freak dinners by which American millionaires love to display their capacity for "hanging the expense," took place at. the Waldorf Astoria recently (relates the London "Daily News"). As the guests entered they suddenly found themselves lost in a grove of palm trees with monkeys swinging on the branches. Arab guides received the and conducted them to a large ballroom arranged to imitute the desert. Sand four inches deep covered the floor, and appropriate scenery hid the walls.
Two hundred guests were served by waiters, genuine and imitation natives, but all were in costume. During the dinner dervishes, sword jugglers, and dancers performed on the sand. Many guests were alarmed for a moment when Arabs on horseback dashed in and gave their performance. The finale was a procession of elephants, camels, and other animals. This waa somewhat spoiled by the behaviour of the. caniels. As soon qa theysmelt the sand they rushed in snorting, lunging about, and. finally threw themselves down ' and rolled dew lighteilly on the floor. ■' jlathrr.w Brush, the franker host, -was delighted with thra tuccoss of his effort. Incidentally, he is a large shareholder 5n the hotel, which naturally will not lack publicity.
