A NEW SCAFFOLDING

DEMONSTRATED TO BUILDERS. Leading builders,' architects, ' and others interested were invited by Messrs. Briseoc and Co., Ltd., to a. demonstration at Hope Bros.' new building, Dixon street-, of a new scaffolding, manufactured by tho Patent Scaffolding (Jompanv. with the aims in particular of simplifying, of making more safe, and speeding up construction work, and facing upon structural frame and concrete buildings. Tha essentials of tho system —it is so simple that it certainly cannot be described as tho secrets—are the small double-pauled (hence double-safety) winches which are built into the steel stirrups which hold the wooden working platform. These, winches carry a sufficient length of steel, rope, the free cud being carried aloft and attached to girders projecting horizontally (several alternative systems of girder placing being applied), and the scaffolding is then raised as required by ratcheting tho winches. Two types were yesterday demonstrated, on<y for heavy con-, structional work and the other for light facing and other work, and the rate" at which the- latter was hoisted by the two nu.-vi on tho working platform' was surprising. The heavy type may bo so placed as to form a very solid platform completely round a building, conforming easily to curves and angles. The main claims made for the system, which, by the way, was applied to the Equitable and Wool worth buildings, New York, the largest and highest buildings respectively in tho world, arc safety a.net proof against fool play, independence oF interior construction, minimising of cartage and storage, no obstruction below scaffold, low cost of erection and operation, rapid progress of work", and low maintenance- ;md other ebari'ca.— Published by arrangement.
