A little less rain and a better glimpse of sunshine have made local conditions somewhat brighter to : day, but the official forecast for the immediate future shows that showery "and changeable weather is still to be the order. However, the Director of tlie Meteorological Office (Mr. D. C. Bates) says t'uat thereis a chance of better conditions for tha week-end. The records'of rainfall show that Wellington has had a lengthy period of wet weather, rain in measureable quantities having fallen on 75 days since the beginning of May. During the present month rain has been measured on eighteen days, and the total now stands at seven inches, which is 2.60 inches above the average for August.-

During lust night there was a good deal of rain and snow in various .pla.ces, while eight degrees of fro6t were registered in Wellington. Snow fell at xaihape and in the South Island, and it was still falling in some, ;of. the. southern districts this morning.* Timaru experienced heavy rain and " high' winds during the night, and south-westerly f gales were reported ■ from Christchurch and one or ' two other places in the- South this' morning. Strong- south to south-easterly gales have predominated, and are likely to continue for a little while, with cold, changeable, and showery weather generally, and more snow. The barometer is due to rise everywhere, and^eas are likely to be rough to considerable. ■
