THE COMPETITIONS

RESULTS OF TO-DAY'S CONTESTS

SCHOOL CHOIRS TO-NIGHT.

"It is rather regrettable, in fact, lamentable," remarked a member of the Competitions Society" to a "Poet" repnrter to-day, "that not a single entry h.ifj been received for the State school children's chorus, to be judged this evening, the entries received being from Palmerston North and Masterton schools. The shield, presented, by,the Wellington Music Traders, is a very fine one indeed, but apart from that one would have thought that the spirit of competition would have moved the school authorities of this city to enter their choirs, some of whom, we know, sing very well indeed. The shield has been held by Napier and by Palmerston North school choirs, but not yet by a Wellington school."

Results of to-day's trials are as follow :—

Junior Test Recital, girls (under 12), own selection.—Recalls : Misses Kathleen Read (Christchurch), Lottie Colville (Chrietchurch), Jean Coker, and Joyce Dinnison. Highly commended: Misses Joan Ballinger, Ismay M'llroy (Petone), and Aromea Searle.

The junior test recital, as first proposed, had been for girls under 16 years of age, but so many entries were received that it was found necessary to divide the competition into three—section A, for girls under 12, for which 34 entries were received; section B, under 14, 14 entries; and section C, under .16, eight entries.

Piano Solo, i 3 to 15 years (society's scholarship).—Recalls: Misses Ormi Reid, Jean Nichol, and M. Alexander (Palmerston North). Highly commended : Misses Marjory Meier, Roma Burtja, Betty Evans, Dora Sawden, and Edith Rait. Twenty-two entries.

Baritone or Bass Solo, own. selection.—Recalls: Messrs. C. Catton (Napier), A. Flanagan (Lower Hutt), and G. 11. Neel.
