PREFERENTIAL BEER

In his criticism of the railway tariff in the debate on the Railways Statement yesterday, Mr. E. Masters (Stratford) raised a query as to why such a marked differentiation should bo made between various items. There were between 70 and 100 items receiving preferential treatment, he siad.

"Why should candles, coffee,, and cocoa be charged 30s per ton for a certain distance," he asked, "when we charge merry-go-rounds, china, and glassware 20s for tho same distance? Why should we bo carrying beer, stout, and wino at 15s a ton when over the same, railways, in tho same trucks, and with the same management, we are charging 30s. a ton for cornflour, currants, and other foodstuffs? I ask the honourable member for Christchurch North what he thinks of that." Mr. Isitt: "Shameful!" " That is the position to-day," said Mr. Masters. "I had hoped that the tariff would have been revised on a more equitable basis. We are sticking in the same old rut, in tho same old way, despite all the talk a.bout these -wonderful boards of management.''
