GOLD IN AUCKLAND

Thousands of shimmering sovereigns were left behind by the American fleet, and the. bulk of them have already found their way into the banks of Auckland, states "The Post's" Auckland correspondent. It was reported from Christchurch that only a few of the- golden coins had leached banks there, and that tradespeople were showing a reluctance to pass on coins of which they were making an acquaintance after such a long period. Aucklanders, too, arc inclined to cherish tho coin, whether it bo from a pure souvenir point or whether they anticipate that at a later period it will have changed value. However, tho fact remains that most of ' the big business houses which did business with the 'late visitors have passed the cqius into the ban!-: iv the course of their ordinary banking. "So doubt there are thousands of sovereigns still in circulation or Ilia possession of tradespeople, but inquiries made yesterday show that about 15,000 have "been paid into the banks. It was remarked by -an. official of one bank that sovereigns had not altogether disappeared before, tlio arrival of tho fleet, for from .time to time occasional deposits totalling :)s. much as £100 and .€7O wore niatle. • During tho next few weeks it is' anticipated that tho total of .€15,000 which has been safely locked in the vaults of the banks as further security against the no to issue will be increased probably to the. extent of another £5000.
