NEW SOUTH WALES ON TOUR
WEST COAST TEAM DEFEATED
VISITORS WIN DECISIVELY.
(Rt rELIMKAPH.—PRSSS ASSOCIATION.)
OREYMOUTEf, 26th August.
The New South Wales Rugby team defeated a West Coast-Buller combined team by 32 points to 14 to-day in fine weather and before a large attendance. The local pack dominated the earlystages, but tli6 condition and speed of the visitors, especially their backs, thereafter penetrated tlie home defence successfully on eight occasions. The combined team led by 8 points to nil, after O'Neill had worked across from the ruck. Warnes converting and adding a penalty goal. Fast passing and Meagher, Lawton, Bowers, and Heed sent Crosaman over. Following a nice run, Crossman passed to Eeed, to Bowers, who dived across, Lawton converting. The visitors took the lead when Crossman, in passing sent Bowers across and Lawton converted. Warnes kicked a penalty goal, making the scores at half-time: New South Wales 13; Combined Team, 11. Soon after resuming Crossman, flying to the bouncing ball, scored in the corner. The full-back, Tobey, ran from half-way, Ford following by a kick near the line to score. Meagher made a fine run from a line-ojit and sent Ford in, Thorn goaling. Mew South Wales, 24; Combined Team, 11. Meagher got up to take a high kick by Crossman, scoring in a handy position. Thorn converted. Tobey made another good run, passing, for Bowers to score in the corner. Th© West Coast-Buller pack rallied, and Thomas, following a kick by Warnes, passed to Baird, and when he lost possession Walker kicked across and scored.
The game was fast, but the visitors' scoring backs set the combined pack too great a task. The local backs were lighter and slower and were unable to stem the combined attacks of New South Wales. They also missed Steel, who was absent owing to an injury. The combined team's forwards more than held their own both in tight and looso play, but their condition gave out somewhat. O'Neill (wing forward), Brown, Tunnicliffe, Bannister, and Walker (forwards), and Baird (five-eighth) were the best of the combined team. Bowers, Lawton, Crossman, and Meagher (backs),, and Bryant, Ford, Thorn, and Palmer (forwards) showed up most among the visitors, whose handling could have been better.
