CLERGYMAN'S 100 TH BIRTHDAY

The IOOLIi birthday recently of the Rev. Septimus Hungerford, one of the oldest living ministers in the world today, if not the oldest, acclaims the victory of an old and rugged soldier of the Church militant over the frailties of human life. Although now in retirement, of course, he is one of tho most picturesque figures in the Anglican Church in New South Wales; and the felicitations with which he was inundated on reaching tho 100 milestone along life's .journey bespeak, not only the kindly, lovable nature of the whitehaired old man who now sits back turning over the pages of an eventful past— and who, by the way, still loves his game of chess—but also the fruitfulncsa of his life in the ministry. His has been a full nnd active and useful life, and even to-day he knows little of tho infirmity of old age. The Grand Old Man of the Church in this State was a little off colour on this birthday; for the fact that ho had all his children round him, and was besieged with callers and inundated with letters nnd telegrams, brought on a little too much excitement. Of the old days, when Sydney was ■ practically bush, Mr. Hungerford can speak for hours. One Btory he delights in telling, as an eyewitness of the incident, concerns a black who was accused of stealing another's wife^ The black was forced to stand against a tree and defend himself three times against a boomerang thrown by, his accuser. So well did tho black defend himself, with such agility did ho dodge tho boomerang,, and thus, in the rimitive aboriginal law vindicato bis honour, that the occasion wns celebrated by a rorroboree. Porhsp*.it is a, good, thing for wifc-itEaleri tnc&s d»J'l that

the law of the boomerang does not op' •rate. , .
