CHILLED BEEF.

Reference was made by Mr. D. Jones, chairman of tho Now Zealand Meat Board, to-day to export of chilled beef from the Dominion. In this connection ifc m&y be stated that Australian experience with a small consignment was recently reported upon. The shipments were by the Port Darwin and comprised SO hindquarters and 35 crops. The m»at was marketed on 14th May. Mr. Edward W. T. Adams, of the Perfect Food Process Pty., ltd., Henty House, Melbourne, reported that the arrival of chilled beef from Australia In perfect order created considerable enthusiasm. There was a feeling that if the trade could bo successfully established Smithfleld might be rendered independent of tho Argentine. The conBignrnent brought Id a lb more than the price paid for frozen beef, and went within jd a lb of the beA Argentine meat. "Undoubtedly we would have got a better price had we sold earlier in tho morning, and it was a peculiarly muggy day. One of the most, enthusiastic onlookers was the AgentGeneral for Victoria (Mr. (Jeorge Pairbairn). Negotiations are now pending for the equipment of ships with a view to establishing a regular service of chilled beef from Australia. It is probable that somo of the Commonwealth tine ships will bo utilised. If the trade is successfully, inaugurated It will hiilp to stabilise tho meat industry throughout the Empire."
