ATTEMPT AT "FARTHEST NORTH"

NAVIGATION.

The Algarsson Polar expedition ship Island sailed from Liverpool on 23rd Juno on its journey to the Far North, states a correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian." The start was made after several delays during the two months prior to ultimate departure. When the Island left the Mersey she was accompanied as far as the Bar Lightship by the new lifeboat Hanehester and SaU'ord, which was launched at Manchester the previous day and was bound for Douglas.

Before sailing Mr. Grettir Algarsson said-: "The three main objects of the fxpedition' arc. to carry out scientific research work, to try and establish a record in farthest North navigation, and to try and locate Gilles Land, which is supposed to exist between Spitsbergen and Franz Joseph Land. Afterwards we may call at . Greenland and proceed along the coast to New York. We expect to reach Spitsbergen in 25 days, but if the weather is favourable we should do it in ten days. Altogether we shall bo .away six months."

The captain of the Inland is Commander F. A. Worsley, who is also the chief hydrographer a.nd meteorologist, and who was on the Endurance and the Quest expeditions. Tlie first officer is Lieutenant V. W. Dunn-Taylor, and ';!._ Burt (Liverpool University) is the chiei engineer. The zoologist, G. W. S. Mavr, was on the Quest. Other members of the expedition are:' W. A. S. Thorn, analytical chemist, who will take samples of sea water; A., Bissett, geologist : A. W. Sinclair, surgeon; B. Mason, naturalist and cinematographist, who was also on the Quest (he will film the nesting-place of the ivory gull, and take a full record of the • expedition);' and R. Fenton, an analytical chemist, of London University, who is sailing as assistant cook and steward:

Mr. Algarsson gave up the. idea of reaching the North Pole when a dispute arose over his airship. He then said he would go in search of Amundsen; since.- Amundsen, reappeared he decided on a scientific expedition.
