OBITUARY

MAJOR-GENERAL TARBAYEFF,

The death occurred at his residence, 11, Wellington road, yesterday of MajorGeneral Ivan Itorbayeff, .a noted Russian soldier, who had been a resident of Wellington since 1920. Until a few years' ago the late General Tarbayeff held an important position in the Tsar's Imperial Army; but owing to the operations of the Bolsheviks he was forced to leave his country, and he found refuge in tho British Empire. At the time of his death he was 54 years of age.

At the outbreak of the Great War the late General Tarbayeff was a colonel in the Imperial Guard of the Enssian Army, and he fought on the Eastern front. Speedy promotion came his way as the result of his capacities as a. leader and commander, and ho finally attained the rank of Majoi'-General. His division ■was the last Imperial unit engaged in hostilities after the outbreak of the Revolution, and at that time General Tarbayeff was engaged on . the Salonika front. It was General Tarbayeff s regiment which captured Monastir in 1915, and for this lie was* awarded the Serbian order of the White Eagle, and later received the Oroix de Guerre for further distinguished services. He also received the Cross of St. George, ono of the highest Russian decorations. When the division was removed to France!, where it disbanded, General Tarbayvff found that his land in Russia had been confiscated and that tlio timber on the land had been damaged or removed. He was left practically penniless, and he decided to settle in New Zealand, where his daughter, Mrs. Benge, was already living. 110 arrived here in June, 1920, with the members of his family. Up in. the time of his death he had been employed as a clerk in the Public Works Department. He took suddenly ill on Friday, and died yesterday. The deceased gentleman is survived by a widow, ono son (Mr. George Tarbayeff), and one daughter (Mrs. 0.. H. Benge, of Wellington). During the five years which he spent in Wellington the hte MajorGeneral Tarbayeff mado many friends, and his death came as a, shock. The funeral will take place- to-morrow, and the Defence Department, has announced that it will be of a military description as a mark of recognition of the distinguished servicef rendered by the li>tu General Tarbuycl'f m the cause of the Allies.
